My name is Erin Irwin, and I am the coordinator for the Junior Rockhounds. I began planning this group at the end of 2022, and our first meeting was in January 2023. I joined the Lubbock Gem and Mineral Society with very little knowledge of rocks and minerals, but as a homeschool parent, I love the idea of finding new ways for kids to learn.

The number one goal I have for this group is to have fun! I want to instill a fascination for geology in the world. In addition, I want to reach as many kids as possible to encourage whatever interest they may have in geology, rocks, fossils, and lapidary arts. Through a mix of education, hands-on activities, and field trips, our young rockhounds explore the world of rocks and minerals around them.

The Junior Rockhounds program has a badge system where the kids can earn badges for activities we complete. I try to come up with as many fun ways to teach the kids about the world around them as well as completing activities that allow them to earn new badges.

One of the best parts of this program is seeing the kids be excited about the badges they have earned. Being part of this program is truly an experience I enjoy so much. I have learned right alongside our budding rockhounds!
We are thrilled to help encourage the next generation of geologists. Come be a part of our Junior Rockhound Program and start your journey into the fascinating world of rocks and minerals!
